SNATCH (TV Series) Review: All Icing, No Cake

The adventures of Albert (Pasqualino), Billy (Laviscount), and Charlie (Grint) are fun, just don't expect anything groundbreaking.

The Basics:
Who made it? Alex De Rakoff (creator, writer), David Harris Kline (writer), Lawrence Gough, Nicholas Renton, Geoffrey Sax (directors)
Who’s in it? Rupert Grint, Luke Pasqualino, Lucien Laviscount, Marc Warren, Stephanie Leonidas, and others you haven’t heard of.
Synopsis: A group of up-and-coming hustlers who stumble upon a truck-load of stolen gold bullion are suddenly thrust into the high-stakes world of organized crime. Trailer.

Inspired by the Guy Ritchie film of the same name, Snatch provides nothing new to any fan of Ritchie’s films or the low life criminals trying get-rich-quick schemes genre. It thinks it’s much more clever, stylish, and funny than it really is. And it’s been over-edited to death - most of the slo-mo shots, quick pans/zooms, and whooshing sound effects add nothing to the actual story or characters. But hey, I guess it makes it look cool? Despite all these negatives, Snatch still entertains. If you’re a fan of comedy/crime movies, it’ll be enjoyable enough. The show never takes itself seriously, the plot moves quickly along, has a good soundtrack, and has some fun performances (particularly Rupert Grint’s).

Like I said in the title, Snatch is like just eating the icing off a cake. It has some good surface elements, and is enjoyable enough. But if you’re looking for any real depth or meaning (i.e. the actual cake), you should probably look elsewhere.

Side note: Snatch is an original series from Crackle, a completely free streaming service. Like, you can just go watch it right now, no signing up or anything.

Scene of the season: The gold heist scene is actually a pretty great scene. It’s inventive and fun and thrilling. It’s also in the first episode, and Snatch doesn’t really match in the next 9 episodes.

My Rating: 5/10
